Der hEX S ist ein Gigabit-Ethernet-Router mit fünf Ports für Standorte, an denen keine WLAN-Konnektivität erforderlich ist. Im Vergleich zum hEX verfügt der hEX S zusätzlich über einen SFP-Port und einen PoE-Ausgang am letzten Port.

Er ist preiswert, kompakt und benutzerfreundlich, verfügt aber gleichzeitig über eine sehr leistungsstarke Dual-Core-CPU mit 880 MHz und 256 MB RAM, die alle von RouterOS unterstützten erweiterten Konfigurationen ermöglicht. Das Gerät verfügt über einen USB 2.0-Anschluss, einen PoE-Ausgang für Ethernet-Port Nr. 5 und einen 1,25 Gbit/s SFP-Steckplatz. Port Nr. 5 kann andere passive PoE-fähige Geräte mit derselben Spannung versorgen, die auch an das Gerät angelegt wird.

IPsec-Hardwareverschlüsselung und das Dude-Server-Paket werden unterstützt; der microSD-Steckplatz bietet eine verbesserte Lese-/Schreibgeschwindigkeit für die Dateispeicherung und Dude.
